Ambassador Nominee withstands Grueling Questioning; Fails to Appease Political Left

President Donald Trump’s lawyer and nominee to be US ambassador to Israel withstood a grueling confirmation hearing on Friday during which he conceded his use of inflammatory slurs was inexcusable and wrong. Early reactions seem to indicate that while David Friedman failed to convince members of the political right that he is the appropriate choice to assume the position, he will nevertheless be confirmed by virtue of a vote along party lines unless Republicans on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee defect. Friedman’s mea culpa was challenged by lawmakers who asked bluntly whether his apology was an indication of a change in opinion or a tactic to gain the committee’s approval. The specter of dual loyalty, which is normally invoked by Israel’s harshest critics, was raised when Friedman was asked whether such uncharacteristically intemperate outbursts were the result of his strong love for the Jewish state and if so, which nation would he be representing if conflicting agendas were to conflict. Yet, Friedman was unequivocal in his answer about supporting the evacuation of the post-1967 communities (“settlements”) to which he has contributed generously over the years – he would – and vowed to support the policies of the government he represents. Friedman’s hearing was interrupted by protestors who were removed by Capitol Police. Friedman’s appearance was not without positive response. Many applauded his willingness to take responsibility for his inappropriate comments and promise if confirmed, he would represent all Americans, even those with whom he disagrees.
