A 34-year old dual Israeli-American citizen serving a 24-year prison sentence for a murder he committed in the United States in 1997 shot at prison guards, critically injuring two and seriously wounding one, before being killed by a SWAT unit on Sunday. Samuel Sheinbein fled the state of Maryland to Israel after allegedly killing a fellow teenager. In a celebrated case that became a point of contention between the US and Israeli governments, the Israeli Supreme Court allowed Sheinbein to remain in Israel after he had obtained citizenship and his extradition had been ordered by a lower court. Officials believe Sheinbein obtained his gun while on a court-approved furlough.
