Americans Disagree with Speaker Boehner’s Invitation to Israeli Prime Minister

In an apparent softening of what seemed to be strong public support in the US for US House Speaker John Boehner’s invitation to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to address a joint session of Congress on the issue of Iranian nuclear development, a newly released CNN poll now indicates that 63% of Americans disapprove of Boehner’s end-run around the White House and protocol. Only a third of respondents believed it was the right thing to do. The tension generated by the incident has not abated since it became an issue, with separate but related dynamics at play in both Israel and the United States. In the Israeli arena, the timing of the speech two weeks before general election has thrust the matter into campaign-issue status. In the US, the issue pits the major parties against each other while positioning the Jewish state as the source of friction in a domestic political fray. Prime Minister Netanyahu has dug-in, asserting that it’s his duty to speak anywhere he can in order to alert the world the “bad and dangerous” deal being worked out between the US and Iran. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif are set to join their nations’ negotiators in Geneva on Sunday and Monday.
