After four Gazans died on Friday in the fifth-straight week of “March of Return” protests along the border with Israel, Amnesty International renewed its call to impose an arms embargo on the Jewish state. In a statement, the group cited as reason for its demand the “intentional” and “murderous” killing of “civilians demonstrating in Gaza by the Israeli forces, despite the fact that they don’t pose any immediate threat,” adding that the situation merited an investigation by the International Criminal Court in The Hague. By contrast, Jerusalem maintains that the Hamas-initiated protests are geared towards sparking unrest and has thus accused the terrorist group, which rules the Palestinian enclave, of using its citizenry both as “human shields” and as cover to perpetrate attacks. While an estimated 45 Palestinians have been killed during the marches—which includes many card-carrying Hamas members, thereby lending at least a modicum of credence to Israel’s claim—the IDF holds that it only opens fire at those attempting to breach the border fence or engaging in violence directed at soldiers. Amnesty International is known for its frequent condemnations of Israel, primarily in relation to its treatment of Palestinians, which Jerusalem contends is the result of inherent bias. As such, Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon last July pushed to eliminate tax breaks for Amnesty International’s Israeli donors, although push-back from the opposition led to the renewal of the exemption for one year as opposed to the usual three.
