Amnesty International Says Many Died in Syrian Prisons

The human rights group Amnesty International claims that scores of people have died in detention in Syrian prisons since the revolt against Bashar Al-Assad’s rule began five months ago. They said that 88 people, including 10 children had been tortured to death by beating, burning, electric shocks and more and that they had all been arrested for participating in anti-government demonstrations. "These deaths behind bars are reaching massive proportions, and appear to be an extension of the same brutal disdain for life that we are seeing daily on the streets of Syria," Neil Sammonds, Amnesty’s researcher on Syria, told The BBC. He added that some 12-15,000 were believed to be currently detained by Al-Assad’s government.
