Anger on Both Sides After Hamas Leader Laments “Assassination of Holy Warrior”

The killing of Osama Bin Laden by American Special Forces troops has brought a rare moment of agreement to Israelis and Palestinian angered and offended by the Hamas leader’s attack on the U.S. for the “assassination… of an Arab holy warrior.” Hamas chief Isma’il Haniyya made the comment to reporters in the Gaza Strip following news of Bin Laden’s death. Haniyya said, “We regard this as a continuation of the American policy based on oppression and the shedding of Muslim and Arab blood.”  Sources in Gaza told The Media Line that many disagreed with Haniyya and are concerned that his comments will anger Americans at a time when the Fatah-Hamas reconciliation deal is threatening U.S. aid to the Palestinians. Speaking to reporters on Monday, referring to the killing of Bin Laden, Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad said, “I view it as a major, mega, landmark event marking the end of the life of a person involved in terror and destruction. Our hope is that it will mark a beginning of an end of a very dark era.”
