Angst Rises Among Israel’s Bereaved Families of Terror Victims

As the nation prepares to repatriate a soldier held captive for five years, families of Israelis killed by those who will be released in exchange for Gilad Shalit are speaking out and expressing hurt and anger at the deal the government has made with Hamas. Since the announcement last week of Shalit’s imminent return, a number of family members of those killed in terror attacks have told media of promises by senior government officials including the prime minister and defense minister never to release those responsible for the deaths of their loved ones. Even those who have not lost relatives are livid at the thought of the perpetrators of some of the most heinous mass killings in the nation’s history being turned loose; some out of a belief that it’s unfair and others out of fear of returning 1,000 terrorists to the active ranks will mean for the security of Israel’s citizens. Others are expressing the belief that Israel’s deterrence is being destroyed along with the judicial system which prosecuted and sentenced mass murderers. Sixty per cent of those released in past deals have resumed terrorist activities. Some families denounced the government for failing to extend the courtesy of informing them about the impending release before they heard in through media as was promised. On Sunday, the High Court of Justice will respond to petitions to halt the prisoner exchange. The court is expected to dismiss all actions.
