Four Paws International, based in Vienna, rescued 15 animals from the Khan Yunis zoo in the southern Gaza Strip, aided by Israeli and Palestinian officials. Four Paws has called the Gaza zoo “the worst zoo in the world” based on its conditions due to lack of resources. The most challenging transfers were a tiger and an emu. With the rescue operation, the zoo officially closed its doors. The tiger is headed to the Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa, the porcupines, emu, pelican and several others will go to Jordan’s New Hope Center, while the monkeys will stay in Israel.
