Anti-Mubarak Riots Rock Egypt, Leave 4 Dead

The worst anti-government riots in the 30-year reign of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak continued on Tuesday leaving at least four people dead. In Cairo, rallies were finally dispersed in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Demonstrations being held near government buildings in Cairo were replicated in cities around the country as Egyptians drew encouragement from events in Tunisia as evidenced by the sea of Tunisian and Egyptian flags being waved by demonstrators. Witnesses on the scene described police acting in an unexpectedly laid-back manner in the early hours of the Cairo protests, but as the crowds grew and became louder, police tactics became more violent. Egyptian officials are believed to have blocked access to social media as it became apparent that the Internet was being used to coordinate and encourage protestors. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton supported the Mubarak government during the unrest, calling it “stable” and suggesting that it was looking for ways to improve Egyptians’ lives.
