Arab Foreign Ministers Meet on Eve of Annapolis

Two key decisions will be made over the next couple of days ahead of the Annapolis peace summit, slated for November 27. The first is the small matter of the Palestinian and Israeli negotiators agreeing on the wording of a joint statement to be read at the meeting in Maryland in the United States. So far there has not been agreement, but teams are working around the clock to try to draft a basic memorandum, which will show some common ground as a basis for future peace talks. The second issue is for the Arab League members to decide who will represent them at the session. Many of the Arab countries invited are expected to send representatives to Annapolis but they must decide at what diplomatic level – with anywhere from foreign ministers to ambassadors under consideration. The topic is being thrashed out at a meeting of Arab foreign ministers in Egypt on Friday. Oman has said it will attend the conference, the first Gulf state to say it will do so. Top officials from international organizations and from other nations around the world will participate in the summit.
