Arab Parliament Will Try to Block Israel’s Turn on UN Security Council

Reverting once again to the United Nations where it finds support for its proposals, often at the expense of Israel, the Palestinians are now striving to block a first-ever rotation by the Jewish state as a temporary member of the UN Security Council, claiming the action is a response to US President Donald Trump’s declaration of recognition that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital. Many observers are reminding the Palestinians that their actions against Israel did not commence with the Trump announcement, but that Israel has long borne the brunt of the conflict in Turtle Bay and now, The Hague. Regardless, the Arab Parliament – the organization created to channel the voice of the Arab street in parallel to the positions of its governments via the Arab League – has asked for concerted efforts to block the Israeli term which is scheduled to run from 2019 through 2020. The Wafa news agency reported on the meeting in Cairo on Wednesday of the Arab Parliament’s “Palestine Committee,” which dealt with issues that included the Trump declaration, Israeli policies regarding building in post-1967 areas and the detention of minors by Israeli security personnel.
