Yemen’s coast guard, operating with the support of the US Navy, seized a ship containing tons of arms within its territorial waters of the Arabian Sea last week. The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Yemeni interior ministry. Included in the ship’s cargo were large quantities of explosives; rocket-propelled grenades; shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles; and bomb-making equipment. An investigation is under way to determine the origin and destination of the arms according to the French AFP news agency. Al-Qa’ida of the Arabian Peninsula, the international terror network’s Yemeni franchise, is considered to be the most lethal of its affiliated cells and is the target of joint US-Yemeni anti-terrorist operations.
