Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas received yesterday at his office Ms. Catherine Ashton, the EU’s High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and discussed with her a number of issues, including the latest on the peace process and the Palestinian quest for UN statehood. The president explained that the UN bid aims to sustain the two-state solution, which is vanishing due to Israel’s refusal to abide by UN resolutions.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Salam Fayyad said the visit by Ashton to Ras Karkar in Area C is a clear message of support for the Palestinian people and their right to stay on their land. The visit, said Fayyad, reflects the level of international interest in the area, which Israel has always presented as disputed, not occupied.
