The Gulf nation of Bahrain, which is also home to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, has announced it is banning all protest demonstrations amid escalating clashes. Bahrain’s Shi’ite majority launched an uprising against the Sunni king and government over 20 months ago. The decision to ban protests did not specify what actions could be taken against demonstrators, but it could mean that Shi’ite political leaders could be arrested or have their offices closed. Emergency rules including curfews and special military tribunals could also be imposed, as they were in the early stages of the uprising. At least 50 people have been killed in the violence.
