United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in a letter obtained by the Associated Press on Wednesday that issues of safety will prevent the final 7.2% of the Syrian stockpile of chemical weapons from being removed by the June 30 deadline. The organization charged with the removal of the stockpile says 100 metric tons of the materials that go into the making of agents such as sarin are packed up and ready to be transported to the port of Latakia from an area near Damascus. But they warn the trip is too hazardous because of the continued fighting in the area. The issue of destroying Syrian chemical weapons production facilities also remains on the table.
