America’s United Nations Ambassador John Bolton told the Security Council on Monday that the U.S. feared Iran and Syria were actively trying to destabilize the government of Lebanon. Bolton called on Syria to respect the embargo on arms into Lebanon that is part of Resolution 1701 that ended the 34-day war between Israel and Hizbullah. He said in his speech that Syrian President Bashar Al-Asad had committed to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Anan to honor the arms embargo and called on Al-Asad to live up to that promise. Syria’s U.N. ambassador, in response, insisted that his country was fully complying with the arms embargo and all other U.N. resolutions. But U.N. envoy to the region, Terje Roed-Larsen, pointed out that the official Syrian position has been that there is arms smuggling across the border that is difficult to control.
