When addressing groups visiting Israel, we always ask whether anyone was NOT begged by a loved-one to forego visiting the Holy Land out of fear of violence. Invariably, no hands go up and the stories flow. But despite sometimes alarming headlines and an overabundance of articles focusing on violence and warfare, tourism – the number of visitors arriving in the country — is up 19 percent so far in 2018. At the same time, the Israel Hotel Association reports an increase in hotel nights sold (5.94 million) is up 13 percent over last year. Newly released statistics also shed light on where the locals go when they leave home but not the country: to resort destinations Eilat and the Dead Sea. Jerusalem leads Tel Aviv in terms of foreign visitors by a margin of 34% to 24%, but Tel Aviv boasts the highest occupancy rate.
