Brazilians Seek to Nullify Appointment of New Israeli Ambassador

In a rare example of citizens of a country actively working to reject the designated posting of another nation’s diplomat, a movement is underway in Brazil to nullify the appointment of a right-wing leader as Israel’s next ambassador to the South American nation. At issue is the nomination of Dani Dayan, who served as the spokesman for the YESHA Council, the umbrella organization representing Israel’s Jewish community living in areas Israel conquered in the 1967 war on land claimed by the Palestinians for a future state. Much of the international community accept the Palestinian claim that the post-1967 communities are illegal according to international law despite the fact that there has been no adjudication to that effect. Nevertheless, Israeli claims regarding the legality of what is called the “settlement enterprise” are by-and-large dismissed and those who live in the Jewish communities demonized as “settlers,” a word distinctly pejorative. The European Union is applying trade standards that differentiate between Israel and the post-1967 areas, and in Brazil, there is great sympathy for the Palestinian narrative. Members of the Brazilian parliament have called the appointment of Dayan an “assault on Brazilian diplomacy.” Although part of diplomatic protocols regarding the appointment of an ambassador includes an approval of the selection by the host nation, a rejection is considered an extreme measure which Israeli diplomats hope will not be used in the case of Dani Dayan.
