British PM Cameron Trashes Israel during Turkey Visit

British Prime Minister David Cameron used his visit to Turkey to deliver a scathing attack on Israel and to place his nation at odds with European allies. In Ankara, Cameron told an audience of businessmen that “Gaza cannot and must not be allowed to remain a prison camp.” Israelis who took note of Cameron’s visit were angered by his comments and by what many felt was the inappropriateness of virtually mimicking Turkish anti-Israel rhetoric while on Turkish soil. Cameron’s assessment of the hardship Gazans suffer failed to include any reference to the authoritarian Hamas regime. Cameron was also seen by Europeans as trying to suck-up to the Turks when he called for Turkey’s acceptance into the European Union – a position opposed by both France and Germany. He riled his own countrymen as well this week when against the recommendations of the Foreign Office and Ministry of Defense he decided to allow British companies to sell nuclear technology to India.
