Bush Administration Sends Another General to Monitor P.A. Security Efforts

Gen. James Jones, who recently retired after 40 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, has been named by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as special envoy for Middle East security – a job that primarily concerns monitoring the development of Palestinian security services and the way they interact with the security apparatuses of Israel and other nations. According to Rice, Jones’ role is to build Israel‘s confidence that a Palestinian state will increase its security and see that the Palestinians are "capable of standing on their own and policing their territory." Jones will serve in addition to Lt.-Gen. Keith Dayton, who has been serving as the American envoy to the Palestinian security services.
