U.S. President George W. Bush will visit Egypt and Saudi Arabia when he flies to the Middle East to participate in Israel‘s 60th anniversary celebrations in May. The Palestinian territories will not be on his itinerary this time as it was when he was in the region in January, but Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud ‘Abbas will join Bush for a one-on-one meeting in Egypt, where he will also meet with Jordan’s King Abdallah II and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. During the trip, which will be from May 13 to 18, the president will pressure Israeli and Palestinian leaders into arriving at an agreement before he leaves office – a goal that this week ‘Abbas indicated was a long-shot. Unlike on his January trip, this time First Lady Laura Bush will accompany her husband.
