Catastrophe Averted in Israel Train Fire; Terror Ruled Out

More than 120 passengers were injured when fire broke out aboard a train traveling north of Tel Aviv in Israel on Tuesday. But catastrophe was averted when a border policeman riding the train took decisive action and shot out the windows, creating an escape route for passengers trapped when the doors stuck, smoke billowing around them. Instead of what could have been scores of deaths, medics rushing to the scene treated cuts, bruises and smoke inhalation. While the investigation continues, railroad officials said the working premise is that an electrical short or a leaking diesel fuel tank caused the blaze. Officials were emphatic that it was not caused by an act of terror. The heroic border guard, Salman Amar, downplayed his actions telling reporters that, “In such a case, you don’t think, you just do. First of all, save lives. After I fired I helped people jump out.” Others on board reported fire extinguishers not operative and fire axes missing.
