The annual commemoration of “Land Day” – recalling the day in 1976 when Israeli Arabs rioted in protest of land being confiscated by the Israeli government by eminent domain and resulted in the deaths of six protestors – was once again tinged with violence. Israeli soldiers and border police used crowd dispersal tactics to break up rock-hurling protestors at the Qalandiya crossing point between Jerusalem and Ramallah; Israeli vehicles were stoned on roadways; the army prevented marchers from reaching Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem; and an estimated 200 marched in the southern Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Safafa. A small demonstration was also reported in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.
