Turkish riot police fired tear gas into the center of a crowd of thousands at Taksim Square in Istanbul. Dozens of demonstrators including children and office workers who had stopped in the square on the way home from work suffered from tear gas inhalation. Throughout the night, Turkish riot police clashed with pockets of protestors. The raid on the square, where the protests began almost two weeks ago, could increase tensions.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was expected to meet protest leaders today, but one core group said it had not been invited to the meeting and would not attend. The protests began over efforts to tear down Gezi Park in Istanbul, one of the city’s few green spaces, but spread throughout the country. Turkey’s medical association said three people had been killed and almost 5000 had sought treatment for injuries.
