United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is scheduled to meet the Somali president during a seven-nation trip to Africa next week, the State Department said. She will be the highest ranking U.S. official to meet President SheikhSharif Ahmad since he came to power almost six months ago. Ahmad’s weak Transitional Federal Government (TFG) is fighting Islamists who wish to take control of Somalia and enforce Islamic law. The U.S. is following the fighting closely, concerned the country will become a safe haven for Al-Qa’ida operatives. It recently announced it was sending 40 tons of arms and ammunition to the Somali government and providing funding to train local soldiers.
