Commercial Trucks Resume Transiting Between Israel And Egypt Through Sinai Crossing

Egyptian authorities announced that commercial traffic with Israel has resumed via a border crossing in the Sinai Peninsula previously shuttered due to the violent insurgency emanating from the largely lawless territory. The first few trucks bound for Egypt crossed over from Israel on Sunday, whereas Egyptian vehicles started transporting primarily goods and raw materials into the Jewish state earlier this month. The Egyptian army has for years been battling an Islamic State-affiliated terrorist group in the Sinai, which intensified after the overthrow in 2013 of the Muslim Brotherhood’s elected president Mohamed Morsi. Since then, hundreds of Egyptian security forces have been killed in numerous attacks, including many targeting civilians. According to foreign media, Israel has aided in the ongoing battle through intelligence sharing and by conducting air strikes against jihadists.
