Despite warnings from many experts representing a variety of political perspectives that the legislation that will allow Americans to sue Saudi Arabia for its alleged role in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, is a dangerous double-edged sword that will become counter-productive, both houses of Congress have voted to override President Obama’s veto – the first time an Obama veto has been reversed. Top Senate Democrat Harry Reid cast the sole “no” vote and Clinton running mate Sen. Tim Kaine (D- Mn.), apparently opting to avoid any possible miss-step so close to the election, joined former candidate Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) in skipping the vote altogether. Critics of the legislation argue that the bill’s suspension of sovereign immunity will be reciprocated and thus open the door to American officials, companies and military personnel to lawsuits in-kind.
