D-Day for Olmert

Israel’s radio and television channels are devoting as many as six consecutive hours today to discussing the interim findings of the Winograd Commission, which is examining the role of the government and the military in last year’s fighting in Lebanon. The interim report, to be published at 5 pm today, is expected to criticize the country’s premier, Ehud Olmert, his defense minister, Amir Peretz, and their former military chief of General Staff, Dan Halutz. Putative pre-publication leaks suggest the report will not call on Olmert and Peretz to resign. Olmert has already said he will see out his term in office and Peretz is pointing to all the positive things he maintains he did in the run up to and during the war.
