Darfur’s Top Peacekeeper Rues Lack of Troops, Equipment

As the United Nations Security Council becomes bogged down in an argument over the proposed indictment of Sudan’s president, ‘Umar Al-Bashir, for alleged war crimes in the country’s Darfur region, the head of the peacekeeping force there has issued a bleak warning about his lack of ability to control the situation. The head of the joint U.N.-African Union mission in Darfur, Rodolphe Adada, said he concurred with a report from a group of non-governmental organizations published this week that said the peacekeepers face critical shortages in troops, other personnel, equipment and logistics. So far the international community has sent some 8,000 peacekeepers into Darfur, but has pledged more than 20,000.
