Democracy in Question as Tunisia Prepares to Vote

Tunisia’s preparations for elections call into question its commitment to democratize following the ouster of President Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali. The nation credited with igniting the “Arab Spring” will severely limit those who are allowed to vote in the upcoming election. Although the ouster of Ben Ali seemingly ended one-party rule, the election commission is drawing up lists of who can and cannot vote, the latter including those who supported or had any relationship to Ben Ali’s party or supported his reelection when his term would have expired in 2014. The TAP news agency listed exclusions that will prevent as many as 18,000 thousand Tunisians from voting.
