Denmark Recalls Ambassador From Iran Following Foiled Attack Plot

Denmark recalled its ambassador to Tehran after accusing the Islamic Republic of plotting an attack against three Iranians living in the European nation. According to Danish intelligence, the suspected targets were members of the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz, one of whose separatist groups claimed responsibility for a September attack on a military parade in the restive southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz that killed two dozen people including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. A Norwegian of Iranian origin was arrested in Sweden on October 21 for allegedly planning the scheme and for spying on behalf of Tehran. Following the deadly assault in Ahvaz, the Iranian regime accused Denmark, the Netherlands and Britain of “hosting several members of the terrorist group.” Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen described the attempted “assassinations” as “totally unacceptable” and stressed that “further actions against Iran will be discussed in the [European Union].” The announcement ends weeks of speculation about why Copenhagen shut down access by land and water to Sweden on September 28 while initiating a massive police and military manhunt. The revelation comes just weeks after the French government froze the assets of an Iranian ministry and two individuals connected to a foiled terrorist attack—purportedly masterminded by Tehran’s director general of intelligence—on a meeting of a dissident group near Paris.
