The German magazine Der Spiegel is reporting that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad is secretly pursuing his nuclear ambitions despite what would seem to be a preoccupation with fighting a civil war that has left more than 200,000 of his countrymen dead and millions displaced from their homes. The magazine claims that a nuclear facility is under construction near the town of Qusayr, a little more than one mile east of the border with Lebanon, with technical assistance being provided by North Korea and Iran; and security by Hizbullah. Der Spiegel claims its information is supported by satellite photos and conversations intercepted by intelligence sources. Assad’s previous attempt at building a nuclear facility ended in an air raid believed to have been carried out by the Israeli air force in 2007.
