Documents that Starred in George Clooney’s Monuments Men Are Made Public

France on Monday declassified documents related to Vichy-era collaborators that had been kept secret for over 70 years.

The Vichy regime, led by a WWI hero, Maréchal Philippe Pétain, who collaborated with the invading German army from 1940-44, has long been a source of shame for France, that helped the Nazis send 76,000 French Jews to their deaths during the Second World War.

The decree states that as of this week, the papers can be “freely consulted subject to the declassification of documents covered by national defense secrecy rules.”

The ongoing classification of the documents became well-known in the United States with the release of George Clooney’s 2014 blockbuster, The Monuments Men, that revealed the extent of French collaboration with the Nazis.
