A wave of car bombings in Shiite areas of Baghdad killed 28 people, as violence continues to sweep through large areas of Iraq. The attacks came as Iraqi Shiites were celebrating the birthday of Imam Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Mohammed. Many Shi’ites see Ali as the most important martyr in Islam. Tensions between Shi’ites and Sunnis continue to plague Iraq. US troops finished their withdrawal in 2011, yet the government has not been able to impose stability.
