Drive-by Shooting at U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Turkey

Although there were no injuries reported after a drive-by shooting at the United States Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, on Monday morning, the incident is being seen as a warning that the nosediving state of affairs between the U.S. and Turkey could get much worse before it gets any better. Officials believe the lack of victims was due to the early hour – 5 o’clock – at which gunmen drove by the embassy, firing as they passed the building; and the fact that the compound was closed in honor of the Muslim Eid A-Adha holiday. The car’s occupants were able to escape the police after firing as many as five or six rounds. Relations between the two nations reflect the angst of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who remains outraged that the United States will not extradite the exiled cleric Fethullah Gulen, blamed by Erdogan for the 2016 failed coup d’état against Erdogan. The Turkish leader, who has been able to arrest tens of thousands of his countrymen because they disagree with him, seems unable to understand American judicial standards like the need to have probable cause and evidence before extraditing someone to a country where he or she certainly awaits jail or worse. More recently, Erdogan has become a destabilizing force within the NATO alliance, prompting some to call for Turkey’s expulsion from the group and others to question which side he’s on.
