The failure of the Palestinian Authority to pay its debt to two east Jerusalem hospitals is jeopardizing the hospitals’ ability to remain viable. The hospitals service Palestinians living in east Jerusalem who opt out of having Israeli medical care under the authority of the PA’s ministry of health which controls medical care in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The Augusta Victoria and Al-Maqasid hospitals said in a statement on Monday that together they are owed some $62.4 million for its care of Palestinians that were referred to those facilities by the PA. As of Tuesday, neither hospital will admit surgical patients due to the lack of equipment and supplies.
