Easter in Jerusalem Appears Subdued; Many Attribute Fear of Violence

Christians from around the world are gathering in Jerusalem to celebrate Easter albeit to many observers, in smaller numbers than in previous years. The reduction in visitors is attributed by most to the ongoing campaign of violence in the streets being carried out by Palestinians that often plays out in seemingly random stabbings and attempts at vehicular homicide. Israel’s tourism ministry confirms that tourism is down 24% compared to 2014. The number of participants in last week’s Palm Sunday procession through the Old City of Jerusalem was estimated at only 15,000 – down more than 25,000 since one year ago. The Palestinian campaign of violence began this past October and continues. Nevertheless, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the site where Jesus was killed and buried, is expected to be filled with pilgrims on Easter morning. Most heavily impacted are the merchants in the Old City of Jerusalem where many of the attacks have taken place. They report a noticeable dearth of tourists compared to other years and a commensurate loss in sales revenue.
