Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly met with Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre in Cairo on Saturday to discuss enhancing economic and security cooperation between the two nations, according to a statement from the Egyptian cabinet. During the meeting, Madbouly emphasized Egypt’s commitment to bolstering economic, trade, and investment ties with Somalia, including the export of essential commodities to support the Somali population.
Madbouly also reaffirmed Egypt’s support for Somalia’s sovereignty and unity, particularly in light of recent developments in the region. This follows the controversial agreement between Somaliland, a self-declared independent region of Somalia, and Ethiopia, which grants Ethiopia a 50-year lease on a section of Somaliland’s coastline. Somalia considers the agreement a violation of its territorial integrity.
