Egypt Jails Two for Killing That Spurred Revolution

Two police officers responsible for the beating death of a 28-year-old man that ignited the Egyptian revolution were sentenced by an Egyptian court to seven years in prison on Wednesday. But the sentence angered both sides. The family of the victim, Khaled Said, called the punishment too lenient while relatives of the two officers, Mahmoud Salah and Awad Ismaeil, physically attacked the prosecutors in the Alexandria courtroom. The two men had been convicted of manslaughter. Said died after he was hauled out of an Internet cafe in Alexandria in June 2010, with witnesses saying the police beat him while an initial autopsy insisted he died of suffocation as he tried to swallow a stash of hashish. A Facebook page dedicated to him with more than 1.5 million followers urged supporters to attend the anti-government rallies last January that started the revolution. Said’s name was woven into the antigovernment chants.
