Egypt Livid Over Israeli “Interference” in Relations with U.S.

Egypt is blaming Israel for an American Congressional move to freeze $100 million in military aid until it is satisfied that the Egyptians are doing enough to prevent the smuggling of arms into the Gaza Strip. Speaking in Sharm A-Sheikh, where Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was hosting Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Mubarak spokesman Suleiman Awad blasted Israel rather than the U.S. over the issue. He told reporters that, "Egypt rejects and denounces the Israeli government’s interference in the US Congress’s decision to suspend 100 million dollars in military aid to Egypt."  The Egyptians contend that the move by Congress was prompted by "false accusations" Israel made against it. Suleiman said the reason Israel did so was to direct attention away from Israel‘s planned building in post-1967 territories, contrary to its obligations in the Road Map peace plan and reiterated at the Annapolis conference last month. Israeli officials confirmed that "an array of evidence and intelligence reports on weapons smuggling" has been provided by Jerusalem to Washington recently. Among the evidence was video footage showing Egyptian border police assisting illegal entries into Israel, presumably of terrorists.
