Egypt Plans to Strengthen Gaza Border Patrol; Fears “Smart Bomb” Use

An Egyptian source said on Saturday that the military force on its side of the border with the Gaza Strip would be beefed up by as many as 5,000 troops in order to prevent arms smuggling and what is believed to be an imminent Israeli action to counter it. The Egyptians believe that Israel is planning to use smart bombs against tunnels dug between Egypt and the Gaza Strip and are concerned about the collateral damage that use of the weapon might cause its civilian population. The present force of 750 men that has been in place since Israel’s unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza Strip one year ago has been largely ineffective as arms have flowed into Palestinian territories from Egypt at a significant rate. Israel Radio reported on Sunday that Egypt had not informed Israel of any plans to strengthen the Egypt-Gaza border force. An Israeli source said on Saturday that Egypt would be informed of plans for any major operation, but the Egyptians said they had received no such notice. Egypt also announced on Saturday that Bedouin trackers working for the Egyptian army discovered one ton of explosives apparently headed for the Palestinian Authority.
