Egyptian Foreign Minister Backs Treaty with Israel

Egypt’s foreign minister said on Monday that there’s no reason to fear that his nation will abrogate the historic treaty with Israel. In an interview with the Associated Press, Mohamad Amr spoke only days after the prime minister brought up a theme that’s been recurring since the fall of Hosni Mubarak when he said the treaty, in place since 1979, is “not sacred” and is open to future revisions. But Amr backpedaled, saying Egypt “honored all its agreements.” At the core of the commitment to the treaty with Israel is Egypt’s relationship with the United States, which provides it with almost $ 2 billion in aid yearly since the signing of the treaty.
