Egyptian Pipeline Blown Up for the Sixth Time

The pipeline carrying Egyptian natural gas to Israel and Jordan was sabotaged on Tuesday for the sixth time since the overthrow of former president Hosni Mubarak. The explosion took place in the Sinai Peninsula, near the town of El-Arish. The contract under which Egypt supplies Israel with 40% of its natural gas supply has been controversial and was frequently raised by those involved in the overthrow of Mubarak as something that needs to be “fixed.” A former official in the Mubarak has already received a lengthy jail term for crimes stemming from the deal. Mubarak’s successors want to re-open negotiations and modify the contract to give Egypt a better return.
