Egyptian Riots Continue into 6th Day

Rioters in Egyptian towns along the Suez Canal — Port Said, Ismailia and Suez – and the cities of Alexandria and Cairo continued to demonstrate through the night despite the imposition of a curfew and invoking of emergency rule by the Morsi regime. Since last Thursday, 52 people have been killed on the streets by the government’s security apparatus. Cars set on fire lit up the night skies over Cairo and in each venue protestors chanted anti-Morsi slogans. In a bizarre turn of events, the first democratically-elected Egyptian government is being charged with anti-democratic policies and behavior by masses of citizens seeking to topple the regime undemocratically. During the night, rioters in Port Said attacked police stations, with at least two men dying in the melee. The emergency laws invoked by President Morsi, including granting soldiers the power to arrest civilians, are seen by some as further provoking resistance to the new government and encouraging civil disobedience.
