Egyptian Salafists Seek to Amend, Not Rescind, Egypt-Israel Treaty

Egypt’s Salafist Al-Nour party says it will seek to make revisions in the 1979 treaty between Egypt and Israel rather than try to scuttle it altogether. In a statement released on Saturday, the party said it would use “legitimate means” to alter what it termed “exploitative clauses” including limits on the Egyptian force stationed in the Sinai Peninsula and revenue it receives from Israel pursuant to the natural gas contract. Despite its willingness to abide by the treaty, the party’s statement nevertheless placed it firmly against “normalization” with Israel, which was referred to as “an entity which wants to wipe off our identity, occupies our lands, imposes a siege on our brothers and strongly supports our hangers.” The strong showing by Egypt’s Islamist parties had sparked widespread speculation that the historic pact signed in 1979 was in jeopardy, but Al-Nour, representing the Salafists which are considered to be more fundamentalist in their philosophy than the Muslim Brotherhood, has gone on record as being willing to talk to Israel and to abide by agreements signed by the Mubarak administration.
