Egyptian secret police have reportedly arrested an Australian journalist and a reporter for Al-Jazeera on suspicion that their broadcasts “harmed national security.” Both detainees had set up a makeshift broadcast position in a Cairo hotel which was raided by the police who confiscated equipment and detained the reporters. The Al-Jazeera reporter was identified as a member of the Muslim Brotherhood which last week was designated a terrorist organization by Egypt’s interim government. Both men were found with Muslim Brotherhood literature in their possession, which is now a crime in Egypt. The French news agency AFP reported that the alleged Al-Jazeera reporter, Mohamed Adel Fahmy, has no known contact with the Muslim Brotherhood. Egyptian police are holding other Al-Jazeera reporters in custody.
