In a surprise development on Monday, the Egyptian government has resigned. The announcement was made on live television by interim Prime Minister Hazem El-Beblawi following a brief cabinet meeting in Cairo. Unrest continues to spread, with public sector strikes, including garbage collectors and transport workers, impacting on the lives of Egyptians. Much of the public criticism of the government has been aimed at El-Beblawi while Defense Minister/army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi remains a popular favorite to become the next president. Al-Sisi was expected to resign from the cabinet shortly to pursue the presidential run.
