Egyptians Defy Order to End Demonstrations; Death Toll at Six

Protestors in Egypt continue to demonstrate against the Hosni Mubarak regime in defiance of government orders. A soldier and demonstrator died amid violent clashes in Cairo bringing the death toll to six since the Tunisia-inspired rallies began three days ago. Civilians used rocks and firebombs against police who responded with water canon and tear gas. Police report that more than 1,000 arrests have been made. The protests, which are taking place in several Egyptian cities, have attracted crowds in the tens of thousands: the most visible and angry demonstrations to occur during President Mubarak’s 30-year rule. The American administration has urged Mubarak to allow peaceful demonstrations. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday that the U.S. hopes that “the Egyptian government will take this opportunity to implement political, economic and social reforms that will answer the legitimate interests of the Egyptian people.”
