Egyptians go to the polls on Sunday to elect a new parliament amid international criticism that the system pre-determines an overwhelming win by President Hosni Mubarak’s ruling party at the expense of Egyptians’ civil rights. Observers predict a low turnout as supporters of opposition parties complain that they are not allowed to enter polling stations. Some of those not allowed in clashed with police as they protested their alleged disenfranchisement. Mubarak’s National Democratic Party is expected to win an overwhelming majority of the 508 seats up grabs before he adds his own hand-picked legislators to fill the final ten seats.
