Egypt’s Al-Sisi Visits White House, Spared Human Rights Inquiries

President Donald Trump proved to be a gracious host when Egyptian President Abdel Fatteh Al-Sisi visited the White House on Tuesday. Despite being a rare example of bipartisanship within the contentious halls of Congress, questions about Egypt’s worsening human rights situation appeared to be off limits. When a reporter asked whether President Trump endorsed Sisi’s efforts to add 15-years to his term of office, he hailed his guest as “a great president” who is “doing a great job” – an assessment with which a growing number of members of Congress from both parties – 17 are signors of a letter to the president — will disagree. Critics were not assuaged by the reference to human rights in a prepared statement (“The United States encourages the Egyptian government to preserve space for civil society and to protect human rights.”), but were more concerned that President Trump had no answer to questions about Egypt’s acquisition of Russian war planes.
